Maahali kizhangu
Maahali kizhangu or sarsaparilla would be more comprehensive if it is called nannari. Commonly known for its coolant properties, it is also consumed in pickle form which is known as Maahali kizhangu thayir oorgai.
Maahali kizhangu has no oil in its ingredients and is popular among the Brahmin community. It purifies blood and enhances the appetite. Nursing mothers, decades ago, used to consume it with milk rice. It is also side dish for upma varieties and dal rice and curd rice.
Sometimes curd is added to the entire pickle at one go and yet others add curd in batches, just before they consume it. Buttermilk replaces oil, in preserving this pickle.
Maahali kizhangu is let aside for 4 days so that it gets set, only after which it is consumed. The shelf life is 60 days. Maahali kizhangu is best enjoyed in winters. It is consumed with more saadham or rice with buttermilk.
